About Midtown Branch

2936The Midtown Branch is an officially recognized branch, registered under the World Shorinji Kempo Organization, and the United States Shorinji Kempo Federation and is authorized to instruct Shorinji Kempo.

Practices begin with a short meditation. We then do a warm-up, followed by practicing basic strikes, movements, and techniques. The rest of the practice consists of partner work and technique application. We invite everyone to join our branch, whether they have had any prior martial arts experience or not – a fun and great new experience in Shorinji Kempo awaits you.

HISTORICAL ROOTS OF THE MIDTOWN NEW YORK BRANCH

New York City Shorinji Kempo was established on December 10, 1982 at the Ken Zen Institute located on West 26th Street in the Chelsea section of New York City by Sensei Hiro Miyata. Miyata Sensei studied Shorinji Kempo techniques under Nakano Sensei’s instruction for eight years, and keeps Nakano Sensei’s style as his successor.

Nakano Sensei is one of the developers of Shorinji Kempo who personally assisted the founder of Shorinji Kempo, Do Shin So, in the development of Shorinji Kempo and its technical studies in Japan.

In 1984 Kawashima Sensei, our Branch Master, was appointed as Assistant Instructor to the New York City Branch by Miyata Sensei. Kawashima Sensei continued in this role until April 1999 when Miyata Sensei was required to move his home to California. Miyata Sensei then appointed Kawashima Sensei as his successor of the New York City Branch, a position he maintained until he was required to return to Japan during the period 2001-2003. Kawashima Sensei then returned to New York City and resumed membership within the New York City Branch.

The New York City Branch was then headed by Atsushi Ohashi who became the Branch Master in 2002. In 2014 the New York City Branch moved from the Chelsea area to the East Village in New York City and was formally renamed the Shorinji Kempo Downtown New York City Branch.

Miyata Sensei currently practices Shorinji Kempo in the South Bay Branch in Los Angeles, California, under Branch Master Uekuma Sensei, where he provides coaching to the members of this branch.

Kawashima Sensei founded the Midtown New York Branch in April 2014. He carries on the spirit of the New York City Branch as a direct descendant of Miyata Sensei and continues to instruct members in the techniques of Nakano Sensei and the Nakano Sensei style of Shorinji Kempo. Kawashima Sensei also teaches members in his own style developed over his 47 years of practicing Shorinji Kempo under the direction of his primary instructors Morikawa Sensei, Takayama Sensei, Miyata Sensei and Hatsuno Sensei.
